LESSER FLAMINGO (Phoenicopterus minor)

The Lesser Flamingo is the smallest species of the Flamingo from sub-Saharan Africa and India.

The Lesser Flamingo is similar to the Greater Flamingo, the greatest difference between the two is that the Lesser Flamingo's bill is a Deep Red with a Black tip rather than Pink with a Black tip.

Although the most numerous of the Flamingo's, The Lesser Flamingo is still classed as Near Threatened due to the threat from human activities to its habitat and breeding sites.

Conservation Status


Size
900mm to 1050mm (35" to 41")

Appearance - Male
The males' plumage is Pinkish White with Red wing coverts and Black primary and secondary feathers. The bill is Deep Red with a Black tip and the eyes are Red/Orange surrounded by a Dark Red ring. The legs and feet are Pink.

Appearance - Female
Similar to the male but slightly smaller.

Habitat
Caustic Lakes and Salt Pans.

Diet
Algae, Aquatic Insects and Crustaceans.

Breeding Time
October to December.

Nest
The Lesser Flamingo lays a single egg on a mud mound.

Eggs
Quantity: 1
Colour: Chalky White.
